Job Details

We are seeking a Senior Tax Manager - State and Local Tax (SALT) to join our rapidly growing firm. This role will be based in our Irvine office and will be responsible for advising the tax service team and clients on the tax implications of their existing multistate operations as well as expanding operations. The role will address nexus for all entity level taxes including sales tax, new business registrations, strategies for reducing the clients’ interstate tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying apportionment and allocation methods, combined and consolidated reporting to comply with tax statutes & regulations. The manager will essentially team with the tax service team to introduce multistate tax services for credits & incentives, sales tax compliance, transactional work, mergers & acquisitions, and tax research. The Tax Manager is expected to apply and share SALT knowledge to understand potential tax issues and recognize and communicate potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy to the tax professionals and their clients.


Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Apply growth process (participates in assigned RC, pipeline support, COPs, etc.). Compose engagement letters and workplans, budgets.   Participate in lead generation with tax and attest partners, directors and managers.
  • Supervises the SALT engagement (job) including project management, billing assistance, ensures QC (technical) standards. Projects may include nexus review, tax credit& incentives, apportionment methodology, state compliance preparation, review and consulting, audit representation and controversy including VDA and the filing of protests / appeals, due diligence reviews.
  • Responsive to clients’ needs (meets deadlines, timely communication) and the needs of the tax service team.
  • Develops and informs tax professionals of best practices and trends in multistate taxation.
  • Possess technical knowledge and guidance sufficient to supervise lower-level SALT professionals.
  • Ensure all work papers and tax memorandums are complete, consistent, and contain procedures performed, evidence obtained, and conclusions reached.
  • Acquire skills (and/or refine) necessary to develop quality client relationships.
  • Identify key SA:LT issues facing clients and discuss possible solutions to increase quality and efficiency.
  • Demonstrate complete command of all firm software.
  • Exhibit strong communications skills (verbal; written; presentation) with lower-level associates, management/partners, and clients.
  • Provide timely performance and behavior feedback to lower-level associates via verbal discussions and/or evaluations.

 Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required; Master of Tax preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in SALT or related experience.
  • CPA license required, MBA, JD, LLM possible to be in lieu of CPA.
  • Previous experience supervising and training staff and Seniors.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook), and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA Proficient in all tax compliance process software including CCH ProSystems Fx, Axcess Tax, Engagement or other CCH software and comparable programs and standard tax workpapers.
